Gibbons are apes. They are critically endangered and seriously threatened in Bangladesh. Legal or illegal logging, destruction of natural forest and fragmentation of the canopy is the main reason of their near extinct condition in Bangladesh.
Gibbons are declared the most endangered 25 species worldwide. In Bangladesh still there are some gibbons breathing, the last hope for the last of primates in the country.
Thanks to the local people that there is no report of poaching or trading of the gibbons. Also thanks to the culture that wild animal as pet and animal circus and road shows are not a popular event in Bangladesh. Only if we can save the natural forest with its big tree and the canopy, gibbons will come back as they were, singing in the morning, all around....
Nishorgo support project reprinted the "Vanishing Ape" booklet with photographs of Sirajul Hossain. The profit from the sales will go to the local community who is helping protect the forest.

Lawachara, 200 km away from the capital Dhaka, there is a beautiful semi natural monsoon forest. In this small evergreen forest the Hoolock Gibbon lives along with at least five other primates. It is also great for primitive plants and insects. Let us preserve this unique forest and help to preserve the biodiversity there. |
